The city of Charlotte is looking into the possibility of hosting the 2020 Republican National Convention.

In an announcement Thursday, the city said it was working with partners and stakeholders to evaluate its options before submitting a proposal.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase our city, our region and our state to the world," Mayor Vi Lyles said in a statement.

The city hosted the 2012 Democratic National Convention. An estimated 35,000 delegates, media and visitors attended, according to the city and generated an economic impact of more than $163 million.

“People visiting our community will be impressed with the collaboration among our network of private sector, nonprofit and government partners to create an extraordinary experience,” Lyles said. “Our past successes are the foundation for creating a successful event in 2020.”
