The City of Charlotte has named Reginald Johnson as the city's new fire chief.
Johnson is currently the assistant fire chief for the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department in Fairfax, Virginia. He has more than 24 years of experience in fire and emergency management, according to the city.
He will replace Pete Key, who has been the interim chief following the retirement of former Fire Chief Jon Hannan. Hannan stepped aside last summer amid controversy after a jury concluded that the Fire Department retaliated against a former fire investigator. The former employee was awarded nearly $1.5 million.
Johnson said he's "honored, blessed and humbled" by the appointment.
"“I look forward to meeting the men and women who have cemented Charlotte Fire Department as a leader in fire service and emergency management," Johnson said. "Together, I know we can accomplish great things.”
Johnson's first day is April 30.
