Huntersville Doctor Sentenced For Possessing Child Porn

A Huntersville doctor has been sentenced to 105 months in prison for possession of child pornography, according to U.S. Attorney R. Andrew Murray’s office.

David Michael Shope, 43, who is an oncologist, was also ordered to serve 15 years under court supervision and to register as a sex offender upon release from prison.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said Shope used peer-to-peer software to send an undercover CMPD detective multiple videos that depicted the sexual abuse of children. Police conducted a search of Shope’s Huntersville home in September 2015 when authorities seized multiple electronic devices and an external hard drive, all containing multiple videos of child pornography – some of which depicted sadomasochistic conduct and involved children under 12 years of age.

Police also found communications from a public chat room on Shope’s laptop in which he posed as a female with a younger daughter and requested photographs of other females and their daughters.

Shope pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography in July 2017. He is currently in federal custody and will be transferred to another federal facility where he will serve his sentence without the possibility of parole.
