There is a flash flood warning in effect for most of Mecklenberg County and southwest Cabarrus County until 10 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The storm has also prompted a tornado warning in northwestern Montgomery County and east central Stanly County until 8 p.m. Monday.

The Doppler radar estimated around 6:45 p.m. that between one and two inches of rain fell in less than one hour across most of the county, which could result in flash flooding.

The NWS said flood waters are moving down Briar Creek and Little Sugar Creek from Shamrock Drive toward Pineville. Back Creek is also likely to flood and will impact Stallings Road between Middleton Circle and Quail Hollow Drive. Mallard Creek and Rocky River may flood near Harrisburg.

The service warned that most flood deaths occur in vehicles and told people not to cross water-covered roadways, bridges and crossings.

“Only a few inches of rapidly flowing water can carry away your vehicle,” the NWS said. “It is not worth the risk.”
