North Carolina homeowners and businesses who suffered damages from Hurricane Florence now have more time to request federal aid.
Governor Roy Cooper said Thursday following his request the deadline to apply for FEMA grants or low-interest small business loans has been extended to December 19th.
The original deadline was Thursday, following another extension that was granted in November.
The Associated Press reports more than 99,000 applications have been filed seeking help after Florence brought record rains and flooding in September. Cooper says more than $1 billion in state and federal resources have been approved to help North Carolinians hit by the storm.
Cooper has requested nearly $9 billion in federal funding to help with recovery, with funds going toward housing, farmers and businesses who suffered losses and road repair.
The state has estimated that Florence caused almost $17 billion worth of damage.
On Tuesday, Cooper wrote to President Trump asking for federal disaster assistance in 21 counties that received damage from Hurricane Michael's remnants in October. Cooper said preliminary damage assessments conducted by the state and county governments found damages in excess of $22 million due to Michael.
