Mecklenburg County OKs Affordable Housing Plans

Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center

Mecklenburg County commissioners are moving forward with a plan to spend $8.4 million on helping the county’s poorest residents find housing.

Commissioners on Tuesday gave tentative approval to a plan that will get short-term rental subsidies to single men, women, youth and families who are below or near the poverty line, and to chronically homeless seniors or people with disabilities who are awaiting approval for federal subsidized housing.

County manager Dena Diorio said the county is trying to help people who’ve been overlooked in the affordable housing crisis so far.

"We felt this was certainly a gap where people were really not doing anything of a significant amount in order to help people who live in the shelter, that have jobs, but can’t find an affordable place to live," Diorio said. "These are the people we’re trying to help."

The funds will be spread out over four years and could benefit more than 1,000 people.
