The Light Factory To Suspend Operations

Charlotte’s Light Factory museum celebrated its 40th anniversary last year. Now it’s closing its doors, at least temporarily.

The museum of photography and film announced Monday it’s suspending operations.

Board chairman Jeff Wise say revenue has dropped 30 percent in the last three years. He says the museum needs time to reorganize.

"Our hope is that we're going to be able to find a place for the Light Factory name and its mission to exist whether that's in another arts organization or some other organization, so that people will be able to look and find it somewhere in the Charlotte community."

The Light Factory started in 1972 as a co-op for photographers and grew to include galleries, film screening rooms and offer classes at its current location in uptown’s Spirit Square.

Wise says some organizations have expressed an interest in merging or partnering with the museum.

Current exhibits will remain open until the end of the month, refunds will be issued for future classes and two classes will be offered off-site.
