Beach vitex, an invasive species from the Korean peninsula, hurts sand dunes and endangers sea turtle hatchlings by making it harder for them to making it out to the ocean. Efforts are underway on South Carolina beaches to remove some of the plant's seeds.
Earlier this year, the Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce unveiled a new marketing campaign for the Grand Strand. Henceforth, the region would be known as “The Beach,” or so the chamber hoped.
