Steps to Indie Music Success From Artist Arsena Schroeder

Arsena Schroeder is a Charlotte-based singer-songwriter.
Lynsey Marie
Arsena Schroeder is a Charlotte-based singer-songwriter.

Whether you're an independent musician or a DIY business owner, here are a few Charlotte tips to keep in mind: 1. Keep pounding (the pavement for opportunities) 2. Don't sell out (but make it sell). 3. Listen to the wise words (and beautiful R&B singer-songwriting) of entrepreneur artist Arsena Schroeder.

"I got a standing ovation from Michael Jordan, so I think it was decent."
– Arsena Schroeder, singer-songwriter

Interview Highlights:

On why she makes music:

When I started out with this, I actually sat down and wrote out my intentions. My goal has always been to inspire people to follow their purpose and their calling. For me, I think because of the background and where I grew up, my mind was always just running and chasing that thing that’s going to give you security and comfort.

I always hope that people hear the songs and they feel like, “OK, I really need to get my life together because I’m not really living in a way that considers other people and the talents and gifts that I have. How can they better serve the people around me?” So I always hope that people walk away feeling challenged in that.

On playing for a private event for the Charlotte Hornets back when they were the ‘Bobcats’:

So I was more, like, terrified because this is not my song selection. I would prefer to sing something in my catalog. But I got a standing ovation from Michael Jordan, so I think it was decent.

On having Fantasia as a mentor:

One of the first things she said to me was, “I want to help you.” Those were her actual words.

On the live performance series, "Unplugged and Live,” she helps put on:

We provide that opportunity for songwriters to come. We’re splitting the bill. Everybody’s coming up to share their original content in a room where people are coming to engage and hear and listen to music, instead of it kind of being wallpaper or something in the background that sets the ambiance or mood.
