Sports Recruiter Warns NC Has 48 Hours To Address HB 2 Or Lose NCAA Bids

A top sports recruiter in North Carolina sent out a tweet earlier today with a warning: North Carolina legislators must address HB 2 within the next 48 hours or lose out on all NCAA championship games for the next six years.

Scott Dupree is the Executive Director of the Greater Raleigh Sports Alliance, a group which helps bring college championships and other sports events to the state. Dupree has close ties with the NCAA.

In February, he sent a letter to lawmakers saying the state would lose out on six years of NCAA championships and other events like ACC tournament games if nothing was done about HB 2 before April.

Now, Dupree writes, that deadline has moved up to this Thursday.

"I have confirmed with a contact very close to the NCAA that its deadline for HB2 is 48 hours from now. If HB2 has not been resolved by that time, the NCAA will have no choice but to move forward without the North Carolina bids."

Dupree has stated there are currently 133 bids to host such NCAA events on the table. All, he warns, will be scrapped, as will all future bids for the next six years.

"The NCAA has already delayed the bid review process once and has waited as long as it possibly can, and now it must finalize all championship site selections through spring of 2022."

Last week the NCAA issued a statement saying in part: "Absent any change in the law, our position remains the same regarding hosting current or future events in the state."

Several bills to repeal or change HB 2 have been introduced at the General Assembly this year, but so far they've all stalled out.

Tom Bullock decided to trade the khaki clad masses and traffic of Washington DC for Charlotte in 2014. Before joining WFAE, Tom spent 15 years working for NPR. Over that time he served as everything from an intern to senior producer of NPR’s Election Unit. Tom also spent five years as the senior producer of NPR’s Foreign Desk where he produced and reported from Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, Haiti, Egypt, Libya, Lebanon among others. Tom is looking forward to finally convincing his young daughter, Charlotte, that her new hometown was not, in fact, named after her.
