Are you a politically-inclined Charlotte resident with a yearning to take the next step into city politics? Have you been wanting to make a difference in the city, but haven't the stomach or the money to run a full fledged campaign for public office?
Then the city is kindly asking you to consider applying for the newest opening on the Charlotte City Council -- that of District 2 representative.
Its current representative, Al Austin, is planning to vacate his seat on July 16 to take a job with the N.C. Department of Transportation, where he'll work as outreach director to the state's Historically Black College and Universities (HBCUs).
Austin, a Democrat, is in the midst of his second term on city council, so that means the council will be required to appoint someone to finish out the term, which ends December 3 of this year.
Interested in filling in? Anyone can be appointed as long as they meet these requirements:
- Be a registered voter
- Be at least 20 years old
- Be a resident of District 2 (If you're not sure, you can double check here)
- Be a Democrat
City council is accepting applications from now until June 21. Get your application from the city website, and then prepare some spoken remarks to deliver to city council at its regular meeting on June 26.
The council will vote on the appointment on July 24, and the appointee will be sworn in the following day.
