Vice President Mike Pence campaigned for Republican State Sen. Dan Bishop Monday, a day before the special election for the 9th Congressional District.

Pence spoke at Wingate University in Union County, before leaving for Fayetteville, where he will attend a rally with the president Monday night.

Bishop is in a tight battle with Democrat Dan McCready in the election, which is the last unfinished race from the 2018 midterms.

The vice president, a social conservative like Bishop, listed a number of issues in which Bishop differs from McCready, such as immigration.

"And when Dan Bishop voted to ban sanctuary counties in North Carolina, Dan McCready embraced sanctuary counties, and said the governor’s veto was the right call," Pence said. "Well Dan McCready is wrong, and Dan Bishop is right!"

Pence was referring to House Bill 370, which would have required North Carolina sheriffs to cooperate with ICE. N.C. Gov. Roy Cooper vetoed the bill, and McCready said he supported that decision.

Pence also praised Bishop for being a strong opponent of abortion.

The vice president's speech - which was full of details - differed from a campaign speech given by the president's son, Donald Trump Jr., in Union County last month. That speech mostly focused on why people should vote for President Trump next year, and didn't mention much about Bishop.

Pence also implored voters to turn out in Union County.

"And Union County we’re looking to you," he said. "And it’s not a coincidence that I’m here. And the truth is, Dan Bishop’s road to Washington D.C. goes right through Union County."

In last year's election, Republican Mark Harris won only two of eight counties in the district: Bladen and Union.

But he won Union with 59% of the vote, giving him an advantage there of 17,519 votes.

Harris led McCready by 905 votes after election day. But the N.C. Board of Elections called for a new election after allegations of absentee mail ballot fraud in Bladen County. A political operative working for the Harris campaign is alleged to have illegally collected absentee mail ballots.

President Trump won the district by 12 percentage points in 2016.

Democrats say they only hold three House seats in districts that Trump won by a larger percentage.
