The new Charlotte City Council will be sworn in Monday night. There will be two new faces and one that’s returning after a long absence.

Democrat Victoria Watlington will take over the District 3 seat covering west and southwest Charlotte. She’ll replace LaWana Mayfield, who lost in this year’s primary in a run for an at-large seat.

Democrat Renee Perkins Johnson will assume the seat in District 4 covering northeast Charlotte. That seat was previously held by Greg Phipps, who did not run for reelection.

Democrat Malcom Graham is returning to the council in District 2 in north and west Charlotte. He was on City Council from 1999-2005 before serving as a state senator for a decade. Graham will replace Justin Harlow, who did not run again.

And Mayor Vi Lyles will be sworn in for her second term. Incumbent at-large members Dimple Ajmera, Julie Eiselt, James Mitchell and Braxton Winston kept their seats in November, as did District 1's Larken Egleston, District 5's Matt Newton, District 6's Tariq Bokhari and Ed Driggs of District 7.

City Council tonight will also choose a mayor pro tempore. That position typically goes to the top at-large vote getter, which was Eiselt. She’s the current mayor pro tem.
