A Confederate monument outside the Anson County Courthouse has been taken down and will perhaps move to what the county manager says is a “prominent location” on private property.
The Anson County Commission voted 4-2 Tuesday night to remove the statute of a Confederate soldier. The United Daughters of the Confederacy paid $3,000 to erect the statue in 1906.
The courthouse is in Wadesboro, about 50 miles southeast of Charlotte.
The two commissioners who voted against removing the statue said they wanted more information on where the statue would be located and who would own it.
County Manager Barron Monroe said the tentative plan is to put the monument in storage and then let an Anson County resident pay to move it to property he or she owns. The identity of the resident wasn’t revealed.
“The statue would be placed in a prominent location on private property owned by this Anson County citizen to allow people to come up and check and view the statue at any given point,” Monroe said.
Monroe also did not say where the property is located. He told commissioners that the arrangement has not been finalized.
