Special Series: Charlotte Talks Revisits America’s History Of Racial Injustice

Monday July 13 - Thursday July 16

Join Charlotte Talks for a special series examining America’s struggle with racial injustice. Mike Collins hosts a week-long look at this enduring problem as many of us turn to history books to understand our nation's troubled track record on race. The full four-part series is available now on the Charlotte Talks podcast and online.

We are at an inflection point. America is reckoning with a long – sometimes violent – history of racial injustice. Many of us are turning to the history books to better understand how we go through this moment and even uncover events we never learned about in school.

In fact, books about the Black experience and this country’s history with racism have dominated book sales since the George Floyd protests.

Charlotte Talks has explored this history many times over the years, and this week we'll revisit some of those previous shows.

Monday: The Great Migration of African-Americans out of the South in the early 20th Century, told by Isabel Wilkerson, author of The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration. Listen here

Tuesday: The ugly history of lynchings in the south and what we might learn from them today, with Claude Clegg, author of Troubled Ground: A Tale of Murder, Lynching, and Reckoning in the New South. Listen here

Wednesday: How law and policy decisions resulted in ongoing segregation with Richard Rothstein, author of The Color of Law: A Forgotten History of How Our Government Segregated America. Listen here.

Thursday: How the unequal application of justice resulted in the mass incarceration of far too many African-Americans with Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Listen here

Bonus episode:The Wilmington massacre of 1898 was long labeled a race riot, but it was actually a bloody coup orchestrated by white supremacists. David Zucchino, journalist and author of "Wilmington's Lie" shares the story. Listen here
