U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained a man on Albemarle Road in east Charlotte on Monday, May 13, 2025.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained a man Monday just before he could drop his child off at an east Charlotte school.

It happened at about 8:20 a.m. at the intersection of Albemarle Road and Jenkins Drive. Witnesses said the man was taking a child to school at Charlotte East Language Academy when he was stopped by agents.

The school is about a half-mile from where the man was taken into custody.

Marilyn Gomez, the school’s PTA president, saw the arrest as she was dropping her child off. She said she reached out to other parents who also saw.

“The concern is that this shouldn’t happen so close to a school," Gomez said. “As a parent of a child at Charlotte East Language Academy, I am pushing our school board to put out a statement. This is the reality of our community right now.”

The man's identity and details of why he was detained were not available Monday.

WFAE reached out to CMS, and the school system declined to provide any details.

They did, however, provide an email sent to parents from the school’s principal that addressed the incident and said the ICE activity occurred near the drop-off line. The principal also said, “The safety, well-being, and dignity of their students and families is their top priority.”

The incident was one of several carried out Monday morning in the east Charlotte area, according to multiple reports on social media.
