ICE says both men were arrested near Charlotte East Language Academy, but their arrests were not connected to the school.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement released new information Wednesday — days after an arrest stirred concern from school officials, and said a second person was arrested Monday near an east Charlotte school.

In a statement to WFAE, ICE said they arrested Adrian Ojeda-Calvillo, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico. The agency says they found Ojeda-Calvillo on a sidewalk near his residence and took him into custody.

According to court documents, Ojeda-Calvillo was previously convicted of domestic violence and other charges. According to an ICE database, he is currently in custody at an ICE detention center in Georgia.

However, ICE says this arrest was separate from a father who was arrested in his car before he was supposed to drop off a child at school at Charlotte East Language Academy. ICE says they are not able to identify the father at this time.

ICE said neither arrest has any connection to the east Charlotte school, and that misinformation spread on social media causes panic in the immigrant community. The school’s principal and CMS board members have spoken out against ICE activity near the school, but acknowledged ICE has not conducted any operations on school grounds.

A fluent Spanish speaker, Julian Berger will focus on Latino communities in and around Charlotte, which make up the largest group of immigrants. He will also report on the thriving immigrant communities from other parts of the world — Indian Americans are the second-largest group of foreign-born Charlotteans, for example — that continue to grow in our region.
