  • Musical Theater Solo

    Mandy Gonzalez possesses one of the most powerful and versatile contemporary voices of our time. She notably starred as Angelica in the hit Broadway musical “Hamilton”. She is best known for her emotional portrayal of Nina Rosario in the Tony Award winning, Lin-Manuel Miranda Broadway musical “In the Heights”, a role she originally created. She has also starred as Elphaba in the Broadway production of “Wicked”, blowing the roof off the theatre each night. Mandy joins Cain Center for the Arts for our First Anniversary Party – a black-tie optional celebration with a stationed meal and performance.

  • On Saturday, March 23, 2024, Charlotte Speech and Hearing Center will host its 5th annual Communication Counts 5k timed race and Kids Dash at McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte. All registrants will receive a t-shirt and 5k racers will also receive a race medal.

  • Matthews Playhouse of the Performing Arts invites the public to attend a special “Pay What You Can Performance” of BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL on Wednesday, January 24, 2024. The award-winning musical, based on the remarkable true story of Carole King’s rise to stardom, promises to be a highlight of the cultural season. Audiences are sure to be delighted as timeless hits come to life, including classics like “I Feel The Earth Move,” “One Fine Day,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman,” “You’ve Got A Friend” and the title song, “Beautiful.

    The Pay What You Can (PWYC) shows at Matthews Playhouse are intended to make the performing arts more accessible to the wider community. As an added bonus, the theatre donates a large portion of the proceeds to a local non-profit organization. Seating is general admission and is first come, first serve. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m., due to the popularity of this production, the theatre recommends arriving early to ensure a seat. The lobby to the Matthews Community Center will be open at 6:30 p.m. and audiences will begin seating at approximately 7:00 p.m.

  • Opened in 1973, The Double Door Inn in Charlotte, NC served as a touchstone for blues, rock, zydeco, and reggae musicians around the world.

    Music royalty, including Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Koko Taylor, and J. J. Cale, as well as countless local legends, graced the stage in this converted house.

    Sadly, economic pressures caused the club to close in 2017.

    This film traces the history of the club, from its humble beginnings to international fame and the hundreds of stories in between.

    Featuring interviews with club owner Nick Karras and over a dozen musicians, bartenders, music promoters, and fans.

    ALL PROCEEDS GO TO THE CHARLOTTE FILM SOCIETY. THIS DECEMBER WOULD HAVE BEEN THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CLUB.
  • Jeffrey Blount is an Emmy award-winning television director and a 2016 inductee to the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame. He worked on shows like Meet the Press, The Today Show, and NBC Nightly News. He has written a book, Mr. Jimmy from Around the Way and will be at the Kannapolis Library on Wednesday, February 21 at 6pm. This is a FREE event, sponsored by The Friends of the Mt. Pleasant Library, working in conjunction with the Kannapolis FOL. The FOL will be selling hardback copies of the book at the event. Mr. Blount will be signing any copies that are purchased.

  • THE CHARLOTTE SINGERS PRESENT ANNUAL HOLIDAY CONCERT


    Get ready for a FREE Holiday Concert that will knock your “Grinch” socks right off!

    The Charlotte Singers will showcase familiar carols with new and fresh arrangements, along with a carol sung partly in Spanish and a couple of songs even the most avid Christmas music fans may never have heard. The first performance is on Sunday, December 10 at 4:00 PM at Providence Presbyterian Church’s Christian Life Center. The address is: 10140 Providence Church Lane, Charlotte NC, 28277. A second performance will be held on Sunday, December 17, again at 4:00 PM, this time at Sharon Presbyterian Church, 5201 Sharon Rd, Charlotte, NC. 28210.

    The Charlotte Singers are a group of 70 singers, ranging in age from 15 to 80+, led by the indomitable and super-talented Helen McCorkle Finch. The choral voices will be accompanied by Mrs. McCorkle Finch on piano, the many and varied percussion talents of Scott Rauschenberg, the flute stylings of Sue Demick, violin virtuosos Albert Dulin and Ed Wielunski, plus the bright sounds of Ken Edmonds and Kyle Gavagan on trumpet. Jill Fung will bring tears to your eyes with her cello, and the Pineville-Charlotte Ringers will make you smile with their beautiful handbell skills, led by Glenn Luetkemeier. Come to a wonderful concert and then go out for Sunday dinner! What a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon in December!

    The Charlotte singers have been around since 2015, when Helen founded the group with just 7 members. Our numbers have rebounded since the end of the pandemic, and we continue to grow our way to the 100 singers that Helen would love to direct! We welcome everyone! There is a small fee required to cover operating costs. Interested singers should contact Helen McCorkle Finch about attending a rehearsal and/or joining us.

    Mrs. McCorkle Finch was born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina. She received her Bachelor's Degree in piano at Furman University, and earned her Master's Degree in piano from LSU and Georgia State University. Mrs. McCorkle Finch’s experience includes playing with world renowned bass singer Jerome Hines of the Metropolitan Opera, as well as having founded the Park City Singers, a 100-member choral group, in Park City, Utah.
