The 40th Annual Loy H. Witherspoon Lecture: "Loving Behemoth: Queer Animality, Ecospirituality, and Biblical Interpretation”
What Can a Biblical Monster Teach Us About Ecological Crisis?
The 40th Annual Loy H. Witherspoon Lecture, "Loving Behemoth: Queer Animality, Ecospirituality, and Biblical Interpretation,” will be presented by Ken Stone, Ph.D., Distinguished Service Professor and Professor of Bible, Culture, and Hermeneutics at Chicago Theological Seminary. The lecture examines the question, in a time of ecological crisis, can biblical interpretation foster a spirituality that encourages “biophilia,” a love of living things? How might queer studies, with its attention to unconventional attachments, contribute to such an ecospirituality? ┃religiousstudies.charlotte.edu

Non-Invasive Prenatal Genetic Testing (NIPT): Perspectives on Disability Rights and Reproductive Justice
In a little more than 30 years, prenatal genetic testing has evolved into a routine practice adopted by millions of pregnant women around the world. Still, many people question the practice, citing moral and ethical concerns and raising urgent questions about disability rights and reproductive justice. Supporters defend the technology on the grounds that genetic information about the fetus helps would-be parents make better family planning choices. In their book, Prenatal Genetic Testing, Abortion, and Disability Justice, Amber Knight, Ph.D. and Joshua Miller, Ph.D. challenge that assessment by exploring how genetic testing can actually constrain pregnant women’s options. In an effort to balance a complicated array of factors — including familial, social, and financial support they can reasonably expect to receive — prospective parents must make crucial and compelling decisions about whether or not to raise a disabled child. In an ableist society without institutional support for care work, many pregnant women may be steered toward the “choice” to terminate.┃chess.charlotte.edu

An Evening with Barry Corbin
Barry Corbin has appeared in hundreds of movies and TV shows over the past 40 years. Fans remember him early on in Urban Cowboy, Lonesome Dove and Northern Exposure. His career is still going strong with roles in recent years on The Ranch, Yellowstone, Tulsa Kings and he's in the new Martin Scoresese movie Killers of the Flower Moon.

Continuity by Bess Wohl
It’s magic hour in the New Mexico desert as an exhausted film crew races against the setting sun to shoot their blockbuster (but artsy) action movie, which takes place on an arctic (Styrofoam) ice floe, and features an ecoterrorist plotting a bombing mission to save all of humankind (supposedly). As the clock ticks and the desert sun beats down on the not-so-frozen landscape, personalities clash, artistic vision meets Hollywood demands, and the gap between fiction and science grows wider than ever. A dark but hilarious “play in six takes,” CONTINUITY interrogates the role of storytelling in a world on the brink of actual environmental crisis. Featuring Becca Worthington, Jennifer Adams, Renee Welsh-Noel, William Reilly, Alex Aguilar, Dan Grogan, and Caroline Magee. Design team: Evan Kinsley, Nathaniel Gillespie, Colin Harden, Tim Beany, and Hazel Doherty.
