JCSU Health and Career Fair
The purpose of the Health/Career Fair is to increase health awareness through education and prevention in the Charlotte Community as well as assist those in attending graduate school and pursuing their career. We will also be sponsoring a Blood Drive with the American Red Cross. This event is open to the Charlotte community as we are asking all of those constituents who are involved with Johnson C. Smith University to come and attend this event.

York, SC — For six decades, Bethelwoods Camp and Conference Center has been a cherished destination where people of all ages and group sizes come together to experience Christ through the beauty of nature and community. Nestled in York, South Carolina, Bethelwoods is a sanctuary for spiritual growth, outdoor adventure, and meaningful connections that nurture the mind, body, and spirit.

Lecture Series: The State of the Birds of Mecklenburg County
Speaker: Taylor Piephoff
The State of Birds of Mecklenburg County: Tracking the Changes from Elizabeth Clarkson to the Present
Since the publication of the 1st edition of Elizabeth Clarkson’s The Birds of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County North Carolina in 1944, tremendous changes have occurred that affect local bird life. Come learn how an increasingly urban landscape has impacted local and migratory birding populations. We will look at how some key species are dealing with a changing landscape and take a broad look at the species that have occurred in Mecklenburg County. Teaser: It's not all bad news.

Lecture Series: Historic Plants of Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary
Speaker: Michael Sheek - Garden Curator, Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary
The Curator of Wing Haven Garden & Bird Sanctuary will share rarely-seen historic photos of trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs that were planted by the creators, Eddie & Elizabeth Clarkson. Attendees will learn about the qualities of these plants and look at current pictures of these plants in bloom. Come dig deeper into Elizabeth Clarkson’s plant and garden design choices.
Lecture Series: Climate Change Gardening for the South
Speaker: Barbara Sullivan
Learn how you can cope with climate change (heat waves, drought, flooding, shifting plant zones) by creating resilient gardens suited to your own natural ecosystems.
Gardeners can become part of the solution by designing spaces that attract and benefit native wildlife, promote healthy soil, and use sustainable, climate-friendly practices. The presentation will emphasize the use of native plants and will present alternatives to lawn grass. Attendees will learn about plants that are suited to the North Carolina Piedmont. Be encouraged, gardeners have a lot of great options for adapting to and mitigating climate change.

Lecture Series: Vibrant Futures for Historic Landscapes
Speaker: Landscape preservation expert Glenn Stach
Landscape preservation expert Glenn Stach (Biltmore Village, Asheville) will share perspectives and sensibilities of analysis and design within America's most coveted historic landscapes. From battlefields to historic gardens, Mr. Stach will share experiences and best practices for designing with the genius rooted in place of various historic landscapes. Projects highlighted during this talk include work at Presidential Homes, Civil War and Revolutionary War Battlefields, Historic Estates and Gardens, and sites important to indigenous and African American culture.
Lecture Series: Shedding Light on the Impact of Nature & Our Well-being
Speaker: Catherine Goodman Farley, PT, MPT
Join Catherine Goodman Farley, PT, MPT in a conversation showcasing the tremendous impact nature can have on our health and well-being. In her lecture, Catherine will share her personal experience healing from anxiety and panic disorder, share research on the new science of awe and wonder as it relates to nature, and guide the participants as they discover their own unique connection in nature. You will leave feeling invigorated to experience life through a new and unique lens that will ultimately improve your health. Your own personal awe and wonder await.
Lecture Series: The Life and Legacy of Elizabeth Lawrence
Speaker: Bobby Ward
Bobby Ward, editor of A Garden of One’s Own: Writings of Elizabeth Lawrence, a compilation of Elizabeth Lawrence’s writings, will share about Lawrence’s life including her early years in Raleigh and the connections she made while living there. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about Lawrence’s writings, work, relationships with other gardeners and writers, and the many contributions she made to the gardening world. Lawrence is considered the “gardener’s biographer” and is often dubbed the Jane Austen of the gardening literary world. Her writing style was clear and concise, elegant but plain-spoken.

The Art of the Possible: Stories and Lessons from a Self-taught Gardener
Speaker: Linda Jane Holden
Bunny Mellon was an American horticulturist, gardener, philanthropist, and art collector who designed the White House Rose Garden during the Kennedy administration.
During this presentation, Holden will introduce Bunny Mellon's gardening philosophy -- her modes and methods of adapting outdoor spaces to the natural landscape including plant selection, design, and resolving challenges encountered along the way.
Linda Jane Holden’s books will be available for purchase at the lecture.
This afternoon at Wing Haven is made possible by a partnership between Wing Haven and the local chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art.

Learn how to create your own cutting garden from easy, gorgeous, and reliable blooms from bulbs. Ellen will share where you can acquire foolproof bulbs and give tips and tricks for making your own cutting garden.
Mint 2 Move Cultural Dance Night: Lunar New Year’s Eve, Casa de la Cultura, and Black History Month
Celebrate the Lunar New Year with dragon dance performances in collaboration with the Manera Foundation, followed by Afro-Latinx dance and storytelling from Casa de la Cultura. Experience tributes to Black American music, including special honors to Aretha Franklin, Celia Cruz, and more, featuring DJ Carlos Lebron, the Mint 2 Move Percussionists, and group dance lessons at 9 PM with Rumbao Latin Dance Company. Enjoy live painting by local artists throughout the evening. Cash bar and complimentary favors available.

Amazing Grace: Stories of African American Courage, Strength, and Resilience
Celebrate the closing of the exhibition Southern/Modern with an artist-response installation featuring works by Nellie Ashford, Princess Cureton, John Miles, Georgie Nakima, Jaznae Norman, and Brenda Pinkston; art-making activities led by Dena Jones, local artist and art manager at Charlotte Douglas International Airport; a curator and artist talk, gallery tours; and live jazz music with Harvey Cummings; and preformance by Quentin "Q" Talley.

Caitlin Schroering, assistant professor of global studies at UNC Charlotte, will deliver the lecture as part of the 2025 Great Decisions Lecture Series. This is a hybrid event; please register to receive the virtual link.
