  • When people think of Henry Dawes, they think of the Dawes Act and see him as a misguided Indian reformer. By examining his family and their role in various reform movements from the Civil War through the end of the nineteenth century, it demonstrates how he and his family saw themselves as advocates for citizenship and not Indian reform, reshaping how we view the Dawes Act and its effects.

  • Love—timeless, complicated, and always worth singing about. Caritas A Cappella Ensemble takes you on a romantic romp through the centuries with Love Songs of Old and New. Expect fiery passion in Morten Lauridsen’s Madrigali: Six “Fire Songs” on Italian Renaissance Poems—where love burns bright, sometimes too bright. Then revel in Renaissance madrigals by Gesualdo, Monteverdi and other contemporaries. To keep things spicy, we’re tossing in Michael Engelhardt’s Love—a bold, rhythmic modern madrigal that proves love still makes us swoon (and occasionally cry) in the 21st century. Old flames, new sparks. Come let Caritas A Cappella serenade your heart.

  • Parents are raising their children under more scrutiny than any previous generation. Raising a family, once a personal and private endeavor, is now subject to a slew of expert opinions, algorithms, targeted advertising, community feedback, and peer judgment. While research and opinions can be helpful, and transparency can be cleansing, we can't deny the added stress they bring to the already tough job of raising kids. Earlier this year, the Surgeon General issued the first ever public health warning about the mounting crisis of stressed out parents.

Michelle Icard is a parenting author who has studied children, teens, parents and parenting trends for over twenty years. Her work is rooted in practical experience, a fascination with good research, and empathy for families who feel pressure to curate parenthood to fit the new "industry" of child rearing. Michelle has a background in education and curriculum development, has authored three best-selling parenting books, is a regular contributor to national news outlets, and travels the country to speak at schools and community organizations about raising tweens and teens.

Join us for an evening of cutting through the noise, confusion, and stress of modern parenting and leave understanding which parenting pressures are based on “myth” and which parenting practices actually give “meaning” to raising, happy, resilient kids and becoming a satisfied parent and person along the way.
  • The Mecklenburg Amateur Radio Society will officially kick off the annual American Radio Relay
League (ARRL) Field Day Weekend at 2:00 PM ET. The radio operators will spend the next 24 hours contacting stations throughout America and Canada as they would if there was a need to relay important information on behalf of our served agencies such as the American Red Cross and Mecklenburg County Emergency Management.

During a 24-hour period, local club members will operate radios using mainly emergency power
and equipment – much like hams do in countless emergencies across the country and around
the world. When disasters strike, public safety professionals depend on amateur radio
operators to provide auxiliary emergency communications. Despite the development of today's very complex and modern communications systems, ham radio has been called into action again and again to provide communications during disasters when it matters the most.

There are opportunities for visitors to "get on the air" and contact other stations. Especially good for STEM students.
