  • On Friday, May 7, the Ziad Jazz Quartet brings this monumental album back to life on the Virtual Jazz at the Bechtler stage. To help recreate the timeless magic of “Kind of Blue,” several guest musicians will accompany the Ziad Jazz Quartet. Trumpeter Lynn Grissett, whose credentials include playing with Prince as part of the "New Power Generation," takes center stage as he fills the considerable shoes of Miles Davis himself. Saxophonist Adrian Crutchfield’s high-energy delivery has made him one of the most in-demand touring musicians around, having played shows with Prince, Lionel Ritchie, and CeeLo Green. Returning to round out the guest ensemble is drummer Kobie Watkins who has been called “The Swing Master” in his hometown of Chicago where he developed a ferocious style of playing, always with a magnetic smile. Watkins has played, toured, and recorded with Sonny Rollins, Kurt Elling, Branford Marsalis, and Christian McBride, just to name a few. Members of the Ziad Jazz Quartet include Ziad Rabie on Tenor Saxophone, Ron Brendle on bass, and Sean Higgins on Piano.

  • As the weather heats up outside, so do the rhythms of the Jazz at the Bechtler series! June's performance summons a trio of special guests to bring the sounds of Cuba, Brazil, and Latin America to life with Latin Jazz. Latin Jazz is not limited to just Latin America but is rooted in the distinctive rhythms of Africa. There are several branches of Latin Jazz that include Afro-Cuban, bossa nova, and samba. To do the rhythms of this music justice, the Ziad Jazz Quartet brings a talented rhythm section to The Playroom stage. Long-time Jazz at the Bechtler fans will be familiar with Jim Brock, who brings an extensive kit of percussion instruments with him to the stage. Brock is noted to have performed alongside Paquito D'Rivera, Dave Valentin, Alex Acuna, Dave Valentin, and Arturo Sandoval to name a few. Sitting in on bass will be Nelson Rios, proficient at electric, synth, and upright bass, guitars and keyboards. Rios has played with a variety of artists such as Lee Ritenour, Alex Acuña, Airto Moreira, and Eyedentity. Finally, trumpeter Al Strong, who has performed with Brandford Marsalis and Aretha Franklin, will be sure to add peppery brass tones on top of the luscious beats.
  • “Signs + Gestures,” an exhibition in the Projective Eye Gallery in The Dubois Center at UNC Charlotte Center City, showcases two collaborative printmaking projects organized, curated and produced by master printmaker Stefanie Dykes. On view through June 18, the show brings together works from “Signs of the Times,” created in 2009, and “Token Gestures,” created in 2013. While the prints from these two bodies of work differ significantly from each other visually, in both cases they address social issues, calling out adverse components of contemporary culture.

Dykes is an artist, instructor and facilitator based in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 2003, she co-founded Saltgrass Printmakers, a non-profit printmaking studio and gallery providing educational programs, access to professional-grade printmaking facilities, and collaborative opportunities between artists and the public. She has curated print exhibitions with the Hong Kong Open Print Studio and has exhibited at IMPACT (International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking, Artists, Concepts and Techniques) conferences in Dundee, Scotland; Bristol, England; Barcelona, Spain; and Hangzhou, China. Signs of the Times and Token Gestures were both exhibited at IMPACT conferences.

  • To cap off Jazz Appreciation Month, all are welcome to celebrate some of the best jazz in Charlotte, the evening of Friday April 30th. JazzArts Charlotte and Charlotte Center City Partners wrap up Jazz Appreciation Month with a little jazz for everyone. Free and open to the public, a variety of the region’s best jazz musicians will rock the outdoor stage at Victoria Yard. Food trucks will be on hand to create a small jazz festival feeling and a full evening of jazz entertainment. FREE. Space limited to ensure safety due to COVID limitations. Please preregister to ensure space. Save the date and keep your eye out for registration. The Smithsonian Museum of American History created this celebration in 2001 to recognize the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. In 2013, Mayor Anthony Foxx declared April 30th Jazz Appreciation Day in Charlotte, in recognition of the impact jazz has had on creativity, art, heritage, diversity, and education on our community. Some of the most amazing names in jazz came from our community: Nina Simone, John Coltrane, Mary Lou Williams, Theloneious Monk, Max Roach. Join us April 30th to hear some of the regional musicians that might grow into that iconic status. As we celebrate the only truly American musical art form, this month we focus on the power of music to unite people. Today, we pause to “honor and recognize the outstanding work that all jazz artists, educators, and enthusiasts in the city of Charlotte presents.” Victoria Yard is located at 408 North Tryon Street, in uptown Charlotte, across the street from Duckworth’s at the corner of N. Tryon St. and 7th St. Parking along the street, and in 7th street station. An easy walk from the train.
