SUMMER ARTS Camp: Building a Portrait Studio
Kids and teens, capture and edit images with artistic expression! Charlotte-based artist Will Jenkins will virtually teach 11 to 16 year-old students how to develop their photography and visual storytelling skills. This camp will cover skills in lighting, subject placement, and photo editing. Students will be able to creatively use the supply materials along with any personal items to create visually compelling images that complement their unique personalities. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. Students will need access to a camera or a smartphone for this camp. All supplies for the week will be provided in the camp art box. Delivery to Mecklenburg and Gaston counties are included in the camp cost. SUMMER ARTS Camp: Making Books into Art
Kids and teens, unfold bookmaking possibilities! Alumna artist April Marten (Summer 2018) will virtually teach 11 to 16 year-old students the art of books from creation to transformation. Students will learn fundamental stitching techniques to make and bind their own books, and how to transform existing books into unique art objects. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. All supplies for the week will be provided in the camp art box. Kids and teens, bring stories to life through comics! Alumna artist HNin Nie (Fall 2019) will virtually teach 11 to 16 year-old students how to create original comic book strips by developing their own characters and using creative storytelling. Learning how to compose dialogues and create scenes, students will use their imaginations to illustrate scenarios from a world they invent. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. All supplies for the week will be provided in the camp art box. Kids and teens, mix the perfect colors for paintings! Charlotte-based artist Irisol Gonzalez will virtually teach 11 to 16 year-old students paint mixing techniques and color theory as a foundation to enlarge or compress reference images into their art through gridding. Students will produce individual works of art that will incorporate collaging, paint mixing, gridding, and symbolic language to tell their unique stories. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. All supplies for the week will be provided in the camp art box. Kids and teens, build on your watercolor skills! Alumnus artist Tom Thoune (Summer–Fall 2001, Fall 2005) will virtually teach 11 to 16 year-old students lifelong skills for improving their watercolor paintings. In this camp, students will be encouraged to use the color wheel as they learn new techniques to master abstract painting, geometric shapes, and portraiture. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. All supplies for the week will be provided in the camp art box. Spoken Dreams Poetry Competition
"To celebrate National Poetry Month, the Gantt Center will host Spoken Dreams, our first virtual spoken word competition! We are calling all spoken word artists in the region to submit a poem and video of their performance to win a $200 Visa gift card. A jury will select the top 10 poets who will appear live during the poetry slam. The winner will be selected by the audience and announced at the end of the hour. Hosted by Bluz Rogers, this competition will highlight the transformative intersection of poetry and performance. From now until Tuesday, April 6th, we are announcing a Poet Call for established and aspiring poetry performers alike to enter and perform during Spoken Dreams. Contestants must submit an original piece of written work as well as a video performance of that piece. All experience levels are welcome, however, each contestant must be over the age of 18. The 10 performers who will appear live will be announced on April 15th. We welcome the diverse styles and topics that can be explored in poetry. Mecklenburg County’s COVID-19 Task Force Town Hall on Food Insecurity and Relief
The Mecklenburg County COVID-19 Renewal and Recovery Task Force will hold a virtual town hall on Thursday, April 8, from 6 - 7:30 p.m. The entire community is invited to join this free event. The purpose of the event is to bring awareness to the damaging effect COVID-19 has had on the struggle for food security in Mecklenburg County, while highlighting the relief efforts that are underway. Attendees will have the opportunity to hear from key field experts, ask questions, and learn about the various resources that are available to County residents. Global Water Center’s Mobile Discovery Center
Looking for a highly interactive, educational, and fun experience? The Global Water Center’s Mobile Discovery Center (MDC) addresses one of the most serious issues facing the world – the lack of clean, safe water. Affecting 2.2 billion people, the global water crisis is urgent and enormous, but solvable. The MDC tells the story of water and this crisis through cutting-edge technology and interactive exhibits. It is free to the public and made for all ages. The Mobile Discovery Center is visiting Charlotte Premium Outlets from Wednesday, May 5 to Sunday, May 9, open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (3 p.m. on Sunday). Kids and teens, transform vinyl records into art inspired by music! This virtual camp puts a new spin on the classic technique of collage by highlighting favorite musicians. Charlotte-based artist Jaianna McCants will teach 11 to 16 year-old students the fundamentals of digital and physical collage-making by generating digital concepts that they will bring to life on recycled records with images and paint. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. Students will need access to a printer for this camp. Kids and teens, piece together a story through unique imagery! In this virtual camp led by Charlotte-based artist Carla Aaron-Lopez, 11 to 16 year-old students will create their own bodies of work to tell personal stories through the medium of collage. They will learn about collaging as an imaginative art by connecting images that would not normally fit together, while getting to know the history of mixed media artists and local artists working in the same creative space. Later in the week, students will develop their own caricature drawings with the use of color while increasing their drawing speed. Virtual Modernism + Film | Renzo Piano: The Architect of Light
Filmmaker Carlos Saura follows one of the most famous Italian architects in the world, Renzo Piano, in the construction of one of his most iconic projects, the Centro Botín art gallery in Santander, Spain. From its elevated glass and steel walkways to the ceramic tiles that reflect the sunlight and the sea, the building makes a strong visual statement. Saura creates an intimate portrait of Piano, the brilliant designer behind structures including the Center Pompidou in Paris, the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, and The New York Times Building in midtown Manhattan.
Strolling With Shakespeare Presented by Davidson Community Players
