The Global Water Center’s Mobile Discovery Center (MDC) addresses one of the most serious issues facing the world – the lack of clean, safe water. Affecting 2.2 billion people, the global water crisis is urgent and enormous, but solvable. The MDC tells the story of water and this crisis through cutting-edge technology and interactive exhibits. It is free to the public and made for all ages. The Mobile Discovery Center is visiting Charlotte Premium Outlets from Wednesday, May 5 to Sunday, May 9, open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (3 p.m. on Sunday). It is touring throughout the U.S. in 2021, but this is the only scheduled Charlotte event. Don’t miss out on this first-of-its-kind exhibit and the opportunity to make a difference.

  • Kids and teens, transform vinyl records into art inspired by music! This virtual camp puts a new spin on the classic technique of collage by highlighting favorite musicians. Charlotte-based artist Jaianna McCants will teach 11 to 16 year-old students the fundamentals of digital and physical collage-making by generating digital concepts that they will bring to life on recycled records with images and paint. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. Students will need access to a printer for this camp. All supplies for the week will be provided in the camp art box. Delivery to Mecklenburg and Gaston counties are included in the camp cost. If you are outside these counties, you will be contacted to pay a $15 shipping fee.
  • Kids and teens, piece together a story through unique imagery! In this virtual camp led by Charlotte-based artist Carla Aaron-Lopez, 11 to 16 year-old students will create their own bodies of work to tell personal stories through the medium of collage. They will learn about collaging as an imaginative art by connecting images that would not normally fit together, while getting to know the history of mixed media artists and local artists working in the same creative space. Artwork created during the week will be shown in a virtual Artwork Showcase on the last day of class. All supplies for the week will be provided in the camp art box. Charlotte-based artist Lo’Vonia Parks will virtually teach 11 to 16 year-old students the fundamentals of drawing faces along with the history and techniques of the caricature style. Later in the week, students will develop their own caricature drawings with the use of color while increasing their drawing speed. Because EmpowHERment is about girls and women, we will host our annual March virtual event and fundraiser, on Tuesday, March 30. A universal story of survival and the strength of the human spirit in the most extreme circumstances, the story is told beautifully by a two-person cast as they bring Susan’s experience to life and reflect on the current rise of antisemitism. Benjamin Boswell and Matthew Caine of Myers Park Baptist Church join Curtis Davenport to explore these interconnections. “Justice, spirituality and race have always been part of American life,” says Greg Jarrell. Much of the jazz tradition grew up from the church, and also developed its voice in the reconstruction era. There is a natural connection. Recently this conversation has resurged, Greg sees opportunity stemming from the pandemic, and discusses the way in which music can facilitate dialogue.   • Black Lives Matter muralist Ricky Singh will paint live outside at the Gantt’s front door! For two hours he will be demonstrating a spray painted triptych piece, providing information on his artistic process and materials, as well as sharing his experience creating social justice murals around the city. Visitors and passersby can pop in on this experience and walk away having learned more about the medium of spray paint and how it works, while also learning about the artist experience in the context of activism. The theme of Ricky’s piece will be based on the voices of Charlotte youth and their impact.
