  • JazzArts Charlotte is excited to announce a new outdoor summer series at Victoria Yards in uptown Charlotte In partnership with Charlotte Center City Partners. This outdoor series of shows features a variety of the region’s top jazz musicians, to rock the stage at uptown Victoria Yards. In May, we bring you Mac Arnold and the Plate Full ‘o Blues, bringing the foundation of blues, soul, and funk. South Carolinian band leader and guitarist Mac Arnold studied the blues at the feet of none other than James Brown and the Muddy Waters Band, helping shape the electric blues sound that inspired the rock and roll movement. This blues crew includes Austin Brashier on guitar, Max Hightower on keyboards and harmonica, and Dizzy Dizzy on drums. Opening for the night is Menastree, a Fusion of Jazz, Hip-Hop, Funk, and Soul! Menastree is a group of Carolina natives that have come together to reinforce the Queen City music scene. Jesse Lamar Williams, Jeremy Maher, Zach Wheeler, Will Pinson and Braxton Bateman , provide “feel good music” with a blend of jazz, hip hop, soul funk and an eclectic blend of every genre combined. We’ll also have the JazzArts All-Stars to showcase the future stars of jazz right here in Charlotte. This group includes Gustavo Cruz, Samuel David, Holland Majors, Olivia Ratliff, Trey Tarzia, Food trucks will be on hand for all of your refreshment needs while enjoying the music. Some chairs will be available – you are encouraged to bring your own if desired. Victoria Yards is located at 408 North Tryon Street, in uptown Charlotte, across the street from Duckworth’s at the corner of N. Tryon St. and 7th St. There is close parking along the street, and in 7th Street Station, and it is an easy walk from the train.   • JazzArts Charlotte’s virtual live music series is excited to present the Ben Eisen Quartet, performing an energetic set of jazz standards plus Eidson originals. Columbia native Ben Eidson has been considered a saxophone phenom since the young age of 18. He makes the saxophone wail, sing, celebrate and cry. The Ben Edison Quartet attempts to explore language and improvisation through a set of standards and originals that serves as a medium for each artist to express their own creative/artistic vision. John Dillard is described by many as the “bassist of the stars” and “one of the funkiest”. This 2-time Grammy Award winning bassist is known for his heart-stopping, spirit-moving, mind bending musical expression. This group also includes … June will also feature the Ron Brendle Quartet. Ron Brendle, winner year-after-year of Best Bass Player Charlotte and Best Artist of the Year, his quartet presents the best in traditional jazz. We’ve enjoyed Ron in the JAZZ ROOM several times, including the 2018 Rampton tribute.   • This month, we sit down with trumpeter and ColaJazz Founder Mark Rapp. Leading the leading jazz organizations in the North and South Carolinas, Mark Rapp and Lonnie and Ocie Davis have much in common and a great many insights into jazz in the Carolinas today. We’ll talk about the musicians, the music, and the communities they serve. The ColaJazz Foundation is a 501c3 dedicated to grow, support and promote jazz in the Midlands through events, education, recordings, resources and advocacy in order to create a thriving culturally rich community. Trumpeter, composer, arranger and bandleader Mark Rapp is South Carolina’s Jazz Ambassador and 2020 Experience Columbia Ambassador, Mark grew up in Florence, South Carolina, earned a Bachelors in Music Performance from Winthrop University and a Masters in Jazz from the University of New Orleans. Mark has a storied career in jazz from New Orleans, New York to Europe and around many parts of the world. From sold out shows at Dizzy’s Club at Jazz at Lincoln Center to the famed Blue Note jazz club in Greenwich Village, he’s performed solo gigs in Switzerland, Croatia, France, to Boston, Washington, San Francisco and New Orleans. He’s taken the stage with Branford Marsalis, Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson, Delfeayo Marsalis to fellow South Carolinians Hootie and the Blowfish, Darius Rucker, and Edwin McCain. Tune in every 2nd Tuesday of the month to discover outstanding musicians, past and present, regional and international.
