Charlotte Talks: Millions Of Podcast Listeners Start The Day With Michael Barbaro And 'The Daily'
Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2019
The New York Times' Michael Barbaro is at the helm of the most-listened-to podcast in America, "The Daily." During a visit to Charlotte, he discussed why his show became such a smash hit, and what it means for how we get our news.
When the Times tapped Barbaro to host the paper's daily news podcast in 2016, the longtime reporter worried it would mean the end of his byline in the newspaper.
That worry has faded as "The Daily" brings the Times' journalism to a new generation. When the program was nominated for a Peabody Award this year, it was credited with "creating a new genre of journalism."
One reason for its success could be the program's refusal to be distracted by the latest presidential tweet, or ignore other important stories while Washington is consumed by impeachment.
Queens University of Charlotte hosted Michael Barbaro last week, and we had the opportunity to talk about the success of "The Daily," how to navigate the modern news cycle, and more.
