Carolina Panthers Sign Free Agent Eric Reid

Michael Tomsic / WFAE

The Carolina Panthers added some help to their defense today by signing Eric Reid to a one-year contract. The five-year NFL veteran has played with the San Francisco 49ers since he was drafted in 2013 and was selected to the Pro-Bowl.

Defensive back Da’Norris Searcy was placed on injured reserve, leaving a spot open for Reid on defense.

The signing is significant because Reid, alongside former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, has participated in protests against police brutality during the playing of the national anthem.

Reid has been a free agent since the spring. Along with Kaepernick, he filed a collusion grievance with the NFL, which argued league owners were trying to keep him out of the NFL.

Reid has started in all but one of the NFL games he has played in and has 10 career interceptions.
