Garinger Student Charged With Possession Of Gun On Campus

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

A student at Garinger High School in east Charlotte has been charged with possessing a gun on school property.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department charged 16-year-old Del'Marcus Walker with carrying a concealed weapon, possession of a handgun, altering the serial number on a gun and having a gun on an educational property. The weapon was seized and Walker was arrested without incident.

At 1:46 p.m. on Tuesday a Garinger school counselor alerted the school resource officer that a student might have a gun. The officer then searched Walker and found the gun in his pocket. The incident happened a day after a Butler High School student was shot and killed by another student.

According to the district, four guns have been found on CMS campuses so far this school year. On Tuesday evening, CMS Superintendent  Clayton Wilcox said 17 guns were brought onto school property two years ago.
