The Charlotte City Council’s budget and governance committee on Monday discussed ways to streamline their meetings, which can last for several hours, deep into the night.
One topic was to let the public know at the start of every meeting that heckling and cursing will not be allowed – and could lead to someone being removed from the chamber.
Council member Malcolm Graham said he also wants limits on when council members can speak and for how long. He’s concerned that council members bring up important issues at the end of meetings when everyone is tired.
“At 10 o'clock at night I don’t think folks want to be caught off guard discussing a policy issue,” he said.
The full council could finalize new rules next month.
