Up to 180 students could be reassigned from Elizabeth Lane Elementary School to Lansdowne Elementary. That’s according to a plan that’s up for a public hearing at Tuesday's school board meeting.
CMS reports that Elizabeth Lane in Matthews is overfilled with more than 1,000 students and has no more room for mobile classrooms. Lansdowne, about four miles away in southeast Charlotte, has about 550 students.
A new, larger Lansdowne replacement building will open in August 2021 with 45 classrooms — nine more than the current student body is using, according to a report posted with the board's agenda. That’s what’s prompting the talk of reassigning students.
The agenda report says CMS has already held community meetings on the proposal. Staff will present two reassignment scenarios to the board. They do not include any changes to middle or high school assignments.
The meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday and will be streamed live on the board's Facebook page.
