Novant Health Planning To Form Partnership With UVA

Winston-Salem based Novant Health is planning to form a partnership with the University of Virginia Health System. They would create a new company in northern Virginia that Novant would manage.

Novant Health already has a few hospitals in northern Virginia. Executives say partnering with UVA would allow both systems to provide care more efficiently to more people in that area.

Larry Fitzgerald is chief financial officer for the UVA Health System.

"Specifically, some of the things that we will be focused on will be offering clinical trials through UVA in the local community," he says. "We would like to extend a learning experience to our residents and fellows in those local communities."

The partnership would also expand access to cancer specialists. Melissa Robson is Novant's president for northern Virginia.

"UVA has a wonderful reputation related to cancer care and cancer services amongst many other things, and this will help us to enhance and improve cancer care for individuals within Virginia," she says.

Only one UVA hospital will be part of the partnership: the UVA Culpeper Hospital. But through the agreement, Novant would also benefit from the expertise of UVA's flagship academic center in Charlottesville.

Both systems would keep all their current employees. They're aiming to finalize the details in July.

Novant runs a network of hospitals and doctors' offices in the Carolinas, Virginia and Georgia.
