Twelve people died from the flu in North Carolina last week, pushing the 2017-18 death toll to 276.

There was one pediatric death among those reported between Feb. 25 and March 3, but the majority of the deaths have involved people ages 65 and older.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, flu activity often begins in October, peaks between December and February and can last as late as May. Health officials said flu activity this year peaked in early February and has been declining ever since.

The CDC still cautions the public to take precautionary measures to protect themselves from the virus while it's in circulation.
