Office Depot disputes $820,000 property tax bill
Office Depot says it shouldn't have to pay an $820,000 property tax bill to Mecklenburg County. The property under question is software valued at $229 million. The Mecklenburg County Tax Assessor's Office says Office Depot failed to report it. But the company says the tax is illegal since North Carolina law states taxes can't be levied on software that's developed internally. Office Depot argues the statute applies in this case because the majority of the software was developed by the company itself and the portion that wasn't was purchased in Florida. The County's Tax Assessor is asking county commissioners to deny the company's request at tonight's meeting and let the matter move through the appropriate channels. Office Depot is appealing the tax and the case is expected to go before the state's Property Tax Commission.
