ARK Group Wants To Highlight Underpass With Public Art

The ARK Group

An I-277 underpass may soon be getting a dose of artwork.  The ARK Group, the developers behind the NC Music Factory, has asked the NC DOT permission to brighten up the Brookshire Freeway underpass that leads to the entertainment venue.  Charlotte City Council gave its approval this week.

The design is geometric and kind of looks like several highlighter pens exploded.  It will read NC Music Factory Boulevard.

“It’s currently a dark, scary place and we wanted to develop this artwork on the concrete piers that hold up the bridge to create more of an exciting portal for our project,” says Doug Hardaway, the ARK Group’s director of design and construction.

The state has approved two other art projects on NC DOT property in Charlotte, the light installation on the I-77 underpass near Johnson C. Smith University and a sculpture on the Billy Graham Parkway near the airport.

Lisa Worf traded the Midwest for Charlotte in 2006 to take a job at WFAE. She worked with public TV in Detroit and taught English in Austria before making her way to radio. Lisa graduated from University of Chicago with a bachelor’s degree in English.
