Lawmakers Report Deal On NC Budget

Nearly a month after the start of the new fiscal year, North Carolina legislative leaders say they’ve finally agreed on the outline of a state budget.

Both House Speaker Thom Tillis of Cornelius and Senate leader Phil Berger of Rockingham issued messages on Twitter this weekend announcing the deal, and said details will come this week.

The House and Senate have been caught in an impasse as they try to adjust spending in the second year of the two-year budget approved last summer. Sticking points include teacher pay raises, the future of teachers’ assistants and Medicaid.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reports the deal would give teachers raises of about 7 percent and save the jobs of teacher assistants.

Charlotte Mecklenburg Police have arrested 49 people as part of a four-day prostitution crackdown in the Metro Division, which includes northwest Charlotte. The department announced Saturday that officers as well as vice and narcotics detectives charged both prostitutes and those seeking sex.  The operation came after citizen complaints about prostitution across the district.

SAMARITAN'S PURSE DOCTOR TREATED FOR EBOLA

A Boone-based aid organization says one of its doctors working with Ebola patients in Liberia has tested positive for the deadly virus.  Samaritan’s Purse said Saturday that Dr. Kent Brantly was being treated at a hospital in Monrovia, Liberia. Brantly had been serving as medical director at the group’s case management center in Monrovia. Brantly is a family practice physician from Fort Worth, Texas. A spokeswoman said Brantly's wife and children had been living with him in Africa, but they are currently in the U.S. The Ebola virus has killed 672 people in several countries since the outbreak began earlier this year.

MAN DIES IN BURKE COUNTY MOTEL FIRE

A man died Friday in a fire at a motel in Hildebran, in Burke County.   The News Herald of Morganton reports a couple awakened Friday to a strange smell. They said they tried to call the man next door to let him know his room at the Lowman’s Motel was on fire.  The couple grabbed a garden hose to try to douse the fire, but said they couldn't see through the smoke.  Burke County fire investigators believe a cigarette started the fire on a couch in the room. The man’s identity has not been made public.

RUNNING BACK STEWART INJURED AGAIN

It’s only midsummer but the Carolina Panthers have already begun working out in preparation for start of the NFL season next month.  The team says running back Jonathan Stewart will miss about two weeks of training camp after he pulled a hamstring during workouts earlier this month. Stewart says he’s not concerned.  "It's definitely frustrating,” he says, “but it's nothing that I'm really too concerned about it considering my past and my history with my ankles."   He expects to be ready for the regular season.  The 27-year-old is a former first-round draft pick. He has missed 17 games the past two seasons with foot and ankle injuries.
