Police Investigate Drowning Near Lake Norman Dock

Authorities are investigating another drowning on Lake Norman. Cornelius police say 27-year-old Shakira Varner of Charlotte died Sunday after she fell off a private dock.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. off Island Forest Drive, on the Bethel Church peninsula in Cornelius.

Cornelius police say Varner and another woman gained access to a private dock. She fell into the water and didn't resurface. Rescue workers found her at the bottom of the lake.

She was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Huntersville, where she was pronounced dead at  6:39 p.m., according to Cornelius police.

The drowning was the third on Lake Norman in two weeks. A man drowned in Mooresville on Sunday, June 5, and a fire department diver died the following day while searching for his body.
