Charlotte High School Basketball Player Dies After Collapsing During Game

A high school player from Charlotte collapsed and died Saturday night during a youth basketball league game in Virginia.

The Charlotte Observer reported that James Hampton was part of an Amateur Athletic Union program in Charlotte called Team United. He was a senior at Liberty Heights – a private school in Charlotte.

The local program’s director, Jacoby Davis, told the Observer that Hampton was running down the court when he collapsed. Medical personnel ran on to the court to assist him, but Hampton was unconscious and without a pulse when they took him to the hospital. Davis said Hampton had suffered seizures in the past, but there’s no word on what caused the collapse.

According to Davis, Hampton’s teammates want to continue the tournament in his honor.

“They want to play Sunday,” Davis told the Observer. “They really want to finish it up. The coaches are just torn up right now. So it’s going to be tough, but it’s what the kids want to do."

The Team United plays a Minnesota-based team Sunday at 5 p.m.
