A loaded gun and a non-lethal Taser-like device were discovered at Rocky River High School during a random screening for weapons today.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools’ officials, the loaded firearm was located by a CMS canine firearms detection team during a safety check for weapons of students’ bags, backpacks and other personal items. A suspect was identified, taken into custody and charged by law enforcement officials.

Students from multiple high schools attend summer school at Rocky River High. CMS officials say no students or staff at the high school were threatened.

The random weapons’ screenings at district schools started in January in response to the fatal shooting at Butler High involving two students this past October. Earlier this month, a gun and ammunition was found in a wooded area on school property at Independence High.

Sixteen firearms have been discovered at district schools this year compared to nine last year
