A Garinger High student struck by a car Thursday in east Charlotte has died.

Sixteen-year-old Israel David Plyler was seriously injured Thursday just before 2:30 p.m. Thursday when he was hit by a 2015 Acura in the crosswalk at Eastway Drive and East Sugar Creek Road.

Witnesses told Charlotte-Mecklenburg police the driver had a green light.

Police say neither alcohol or speed were factors in the crash and the driver has not been charged. Witnesses told police that Plyler did not have the right of way when walking on the crosswalk.

Charlotte TV station WCNC reports that another student, Brittany Palmer, was struck and killed at the same intersection in 2012.

Plyler's father, Russell, posted to Facebook that his son had just turned 16 and described the incident as a "freak accident."

"My son experienced a lot in his 16 years, both good and bad," Russell Plyler wrote. "He overcame the bad and excelled in the good. He was an old soul with a loving heart. He adored his siblings, and they adored him back. He was happy, and he had grown into the young man of his potential.
