The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office says a 51-year-old man died in custody at the uptown Charlotte jail early Sunday morning.
Michael Daniel Mangan was found unresponsive in his cell at 5:38 a.m. According to the sheriff's office, which runs the jail, staff performed CPR but Mangan was pronounced dead at 6:23 a.m. The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into what caused Mangan's death, as is the sheriff's office.
No further information about the circumstances of Mangan's death was immediately released by the sheriff's office, though the agency said he "did not display any symptoms of COVID-19." Mangan had been in jail since Friday.
Sheriff Garry McFadden said he was "devastated" by Mangan's death.
