A Mecklenburg County detention officer has been fired and arrested on charges of felony assault of an inmate at the county jail.
Officer Darryl Shavers was arrested Thursday morning, one week after the reported altercation.
The Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office says what began as a verbal dispute escalated after an inmate threw a paper cup at Shavers. The sheriff’s office says the officer initiated "unacceptable physical contact" with the inmate and did not disclose sufficient detail in a later report about the encounter, although it was captured on video.
In a statement, Sheriff Gary McFadden says the officer’s conduct is “deeply disappointing.” He had been employed by the sheriff’s office since June 2019.
