Fifteen families had to be evacuated from Timber Creek apartments off Scaleybark Road.

Charlotte Fire Department says 15 families have been displaced by a fire early Friday at an apartment complex in south Charlotte.

The fire began just after 1 a.m. at 1100 Falls Creek Lane, in the Timber Creek Apartments, off Scaleybark Road. Fire officials said smoke alarms alerted residents and firefighters also went door-to-door to help with evacuations.

The families include 20 adults, eight children and various pets, according to the fire department. There were no injuries. The Red Cross Greater Carolinas Region is assisting the families.

Officials said they're still investigating the cause of the fire.

Charlotte firefighters also were called to several other homes over the Thanksgiving holiday for fires related to unattended cooking. That included an accidental fire at a home off Rama Road around 7:30 Thanksgiving morning. The fire department says it caused an estimated $45,000 in damage to the home.

Firefighters were also called to a home in the Hickory Grove neighborhood around 10 p.m. Wednesday for another cooking-related fire. The blaze was controlled within about 15 minutes, and there were no injuries reported.

Another fire at a home on Eastway Drive Thursday afternoon is still under investigation.
