This weekend, bidding began on an almost-life-sized mural of Dale EarnhardtJr. A print of the digital mosaic mural is made up of more than 1,151 photos submitted by fans between May and December 2013.
The Mooresville Artist Guild approached the Dale Jr. foundation with the idea last year to raise funds to renovate the historic Mooresville Depot, which houses the Mooresville Artist Guild. The building is in need of repairs -- mainly for its heating and cooling system. The depot was a train station in the 1950s before artists took over the space as a meeting place in 1976.
More than $10,000 was raised through public donations during the creation of the mural -- fans were asked to donate $8.80 for each photo they uploaded. The photos were then duplicated across the mural to make the image with 6,000 photos. The Dale Jr. Foundation also said it would pitch in another $2,500 towards the artist guild's $1 million fundraising goal. The guild is currently $150,000 shy of that goal.
The minimum bid for the mural on eBay is $500 and no bids have been placed yet, but the Dale Jr. Foundation hopes to raise several thousand dollars from the auction when it ends on January 21.
