Early Votes In Mecklenburg Well Ahead Of 2012 Pace

Early voting is up 10.7 percent in Mecklenburg County, compared with the last presidential election four years ago.

As of Wednesday night, the 14th day of early voting, 211,876 people had cast early ballots in the county. That's up from 191,405 after the same number of days in 2012.

Voter registration is up just 4 percent since 2012, according to the Mecklenburg Board of Elections.

The biggest turnouts so far are at Morrison, Steele Creek and University City libraries, where there have been long lines stretching outside. Other sites haven't been so busy, allowing voters to walk in and vote with little or no wait.

It might pay to shop around. One of our colleagues called several polling places Thursday before he decided where to vote. He ended up at Sugar Creek Library, which has one of the lower turnouts so far.

Early voting ends at 1pm Saturday.  After that, you'll have to wait until Election Day. Statewide voting takes place from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. In South Carolina, voting is from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
