    Our tour on Saturday, Sept. 27 from noon-2pm takes a look behind the scenes of the Center’s Special Collections, the W. Brent Burgin Archives, and the Fred “Henry” Shute Archaeology Lab, led by Assistant Curator Sharon Simmers-Norton, Director of Archives Logan Cocklin, and Archaeologist Chris Judge.

    Tours are free, but registration is required; limit 15 people per tour.

  • Join us for Claudia’s 5K: Call Out for Courage—a powerful event where fun meets purpose, all in support of mental health. Hosted by icuTalks, a Charlotte-based ministry working to break the stigma around mental health and create spaces for healing and hope, this 5K promotes courage, connection, and real change.
  • The Personally Speaking series offers an eclectic range of in-depth research discussions from CHESS faculty in partnership with the J. Murrey Atkins Library. Each speaker is peer-selected to present their recently published research, focusing especially on their personal interests and motivations for studying the topic. Learn about a native animal with Stevens Creek Nature Center educators, and go on a self-guided scavenger hunt through the museum. Weather-permitting, activities will be held both indoors and outdoors. Activities will move inside in the event of rain or harsh weather conditions.

  • Rising 6-11 Graders (6th graders must be 12 years old), this is the perfect time to try rowing as these camps are centered around you! Just like you saw in Boys in the Boat, rowing is the ultimate team sport. We will teach you the fundamentals of rowing and about our program. Whether you are looking for a team sport or to stay in shape during your off season, come give rowing a try this summer. Current CYR athletes will be there helping our new athlete's how to row and we will have awesome alumni helping coach. Why not give this Olympic sport a try?

    New for 2025- We are encouraging all athletes in both the Charlotte area and Gaston County to sign up! Charlotte Youth Rowing and Belmont Rowing Center have teamed up and will be running these camps together. What that means for you? We just ask you indicate which program you are interested in when checking out. We will have coaches and athletes from both programs help run these camps.

  • Chill out with the talented faculty at UNC Charlotte’s College of Humanities & Earth and Social Sciences inside Charlotte’s (air conditioned!) Independent Picture House (IPH), set close to all that NoDa has to offer.


    This newest CHESS Initiative of Lifelong Learning (CHILL) at IPH comprises a full schedule of short, multisession workshops for those hungry for community, intellectual stimulation, or just a place to get away from Internet streaming during the hottest hours of the day. Some of these workshops are geared to the biggest questions of our time. Others are meant to provide accessible introductions to essential topics. A few will help you tap into your creative side. All classes start at 10am and are done by 12pm.

    Registration is $150 (individuals register for an entire session to attend all four courses).

    What to Expect

    CHILL at IPH will offer six workshops – five taught in English and one taught in Spanish – this summer. Let us know what you’d like to learn about next! That might include topics on AI, literature, film superheroes, immigration in the 21st Century, romantic comedy as a genre, how to write a poem, how to write a short story, the future of secondary education in the US, how to learn Japanese/Spanish/German/French/Italian without really trying and more!

    All CHILL at IPH classes:

    --Are taught by faculty with distinguished records of teaching and research.
    --Are designed to be accessible to all students, no matter what they may know or not know about the class’s topic.
    --Have minimal homework and no formal tests.
    --Include “CHILL time” when classmates can talk informally with each other and their professor about class content.

    You will receive a Certificate of Completion after each workshop. And, if you sign up for three workshops this summer, you can get a fourth CHILL at IPH workshop for free in 2025 or 2026.
