Charlotte Talks: Local Journalism In A 'Fake News' Era

Flickr/ Mike MacKenzie

Thursday, January 11, 2018

The impact of the proliferation of "Fake News" along with accusations of Fake News on local journalism. Do you trust us? Mike Collins talks with local journalists about fake news, trust in the media, and the health of local journalism.

Democracy’s success depends on an informed electorate. But where do voters turn to get the truth in a world where traditional sources of information are suffering as they struggle with changing economic paradigms, as the audience for news has split into different camps wishing only to hear their preconceived viewpoints affirmed and where accusations of fake news are being flung at serious journalistic outlets even as purveyors of questionable news find legions of followers?

The national media is dealing with all of this. Is the same thing happening locally? Are news outlets here being painted by the fake news brush? We discuss that and the health of local news.
