Charlotte Talks: Reforming Our Prison Systems
Wednesday, April 18, 2018
North Carolina prisons face serious troubles from staff shortages, to dangerous conditions and corruption. We sit down with our State's Director of Prisons, two reporters who are covering this, as well as the director of NC-CURE, to discuss what can be done about this growing problem.
North Carolina prisons face serious troubles. Lanesboro is a case in point. It’s a prison that has had more than its fair share of violence and corruption. A Charlotte Observer investigation found at least eight prison guards there had been bringing in drugs and other contraband for years. System-wide, our prisons face staff shortages which lead to huge overtime costs, and guards too tired to adequately do their jobs.
