Charlotte Talks: A Retrospective With UNC Charlotte Chancellor Dubois

Tuesday, May 5, 2020

Chancellor Philip Dubois ends his tenure at UNC Charlotte this summer after 15 years leading the UNC system’s fastest growing university. He joins us to discuss his legacy.

Dubois was chancellor during a period of significant growth at UNC Charlotte, which saw a 43% increase in enrollment since he began in 2005. He led the largest facility construction and renovation program in UNC Charlotte’s history, exceeding $1.2 billion since 2005.

He brought a Division 1 football team to the school in 2013, the light rail extension in 2018 and provided leadership for the largest private fundraising campaign in UNC Charlotte history, with a goal to raise $200 million by June 30, 2020, of which nearly $190 million in gifts and pledges have been already committed.

Last year tragedy struck the university when two students were killed and four injured in a shooting on campus. And Dubois’ journey with UNC Charlotte comes to an end as the spring semester was altered into a full online environment amid the coronavirus pandemic.

We speak with Dubois about his many years at UNC Charlotte - the successes, growth, response to tragedy and pandemic - and the legacy he leaves behind.
