Panthers coach Ron Rivera says Sunday's disappointing performance by quarterback Kyle Allen does not mean that backup Will Grier is going to get more consideration for playing time. Rivera says the team remains committed to developing Allen.
"You know, it’s tough, it’s a fine balance, in terms of developing young quarterbacks when you’ve got two of them," Rivera said. "But you’ve got to make sure your starter’s getting the bulk of the work."
Allen threw four interceptions in Sunday's 29-3 home loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The loss dropped the Panthers’ record to 5-5.
Allen has been the Panthers’ starting quarterback since the third week of the season. He replaced Cam Newton, who has been recovering from a foot injury. The Panthers placed Newton on the injured reserve list earlier this month, meaning he will miss the rest of the season.
The Panthers play NFC South division leader the New Orleans Saints on the road this Sunday.
