Lake Norman will host a barefoot water skiing competition on New Year’s Day. Skiers of all ages will brave the cold water to show off tricks and test their endurance.
Logan Harrington, 11, will be one of them. He’s been water skiing — minus the skis — since he wriggled into a wetsuit at age 5.
On a recent practice run on Lake Norman, his dad hit the gas as Logan held tight to a handle on a rope.
Carefully, Logan stood up as the boat pulled him, water spraying everywhere, and he did some tricks.

"I did a couple of 'one foots' and a 'tumble turn,'" he said after finishing his run and climbing back onboard.
Logan is a serious threat in this year’s competition. Last year, he showed up planning to take on other kids, but none showed up.
"So I convinced them to let me compete in the men’s division, and I ended up doing really well in my second run," he said.
So well, in fact, that he won.

This year, he’ll compete in the pro division under sunny skies and highs in the mid-50s. The contest starts at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Lake Norman Marina.
