The city of Charlotte marked the semiquincentennial — or 250th anniversary — of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on Tuesday with a blowout celebration in uptown.

David Fleming is the author of “Who's Your Founding Father?: One Man’s Epic Quest to Uncover the First, True Declaration of Independence.” He joins WFAE’s Marshall Terry to talk more about what has become known as Meck Dec.

May 20 is "Meck Dec Day," marking the date in 1775 when the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence was said to have been announced — more than a year before the nation's official declaration on July 4, 1776.

This Tuesday, marks 250 years since citizens of Mecklenburg County say they became the first American colonists to declare independence from Great Britain. Not everyone believes the story, but that's not stopping the county from celebrating.
