Blind Pilot: Devotion And Doubt

Blind Pilot's Israel Nebeker has a voice that radiates authenticity: Not only is his tone utterly convincing, but he also has a way of relating to listeners' lives in ways even more experienced singers can't muster. It doesn't take long for "One Red Thread" — from the duo's remarkable debut, 3 Rounds and a Sound — to earn that trust.

Throughout the song, Nebeker seeks restoration from a love that almost feels divine; it may be tainted, mostly by his own behavior, but he's willing to sacrifice in order to save it. "Man, oh man, you can do what you want," he sings. "The only line that is true is the line you're from." As clear and direct as Nebeker's voice is, and as true as his devotion sounds, "One Red Thread" exudes complexity, as salvation and surrender are intertwined to the point where they're indistinguishable.
